And in Dubai, 'the world's highest fireworks' welcomed the new year. There were plenty of people there to enjoy the spectacle. Let's take a look.
New Year's Eve was celebrated at new heights in Dubai—"the world's highest fireworks" from the world's tallest building.
Sparkling silver rays shot out from the Burj Khalifa. The tower is more than half a mile high with 162 floors.
Nearly half a million people watched the 10-minute fireworks display from the Burj Park, on an island across the tower and from downtown Dubai.
[Capitan Ali Muhammad, U.A.E. Citizen]:
"Being here, all of us together gives us that feeling of the unity, the feeling of the closeness of the whole world being together."
The crowd gathered hours in advance to watch the spectacle.
"I was first time here in Dubai and I was so exited that we see such a great firework and I think it was one of the greatest moments of the world."
The four-act show was synchronized via satellite signals from a control station.
A TV audience of about 2 billion people watched the show live from around the world.
