An attack by a suicide bomber in Pakistan has claimed dozens of lives Saturday. It happened in a region known for its problems with al Qaeda-linked militants.

A massive suicide attack has left 45 people dead and dozens of others injured. Clothes and shoes were strewn on the street outside the World Food Program food distribution center in the Pakistani region of Bajaur on Saturday following the attack.

A suicide bomber wearing a burqa hurled grenades and then detonated explosives amid a crowd of people waiting for aid.

The injured were rushed to a hospital in Peshawar in military vehicles and ambulances.

The injured recalled the attack.

[Yusaf Khan, Blast Victim]:
"I was going towards the hospital. As I reached here, a woman walked up and threw a hand grenade. After that she blew herself up. I fell into the drain and lost conciousness."

[Ibrar Ali, Blast Victim]:
"I was here to collect rations. Suddenly there was a blast. I was standing outside the queue. First there was a small blast, then another one."

The bomber detonated the explosives amidst hundreds of people from the Salarzai tribe who had gathered to get food rations.

The Salarzais had been forced from their homes by earlier fighting between security forces and al Qaeda-linked militants.

The tribe has been backing the army's operations against the militants.

Pakistan's volatile ethnic Pashtun tribal lands on the Afghan border have been infested with militants and the army has mounted a series of operations to remove them.
