New eye operation restores man's sight

A man who's been blind for ten years and had given up hope of ever seeing again, has received the gift of sight this Christmas.

Norman Simpson had around seventy operations to get his sight restored before receiving successful treatment with a new implant procedure.

Just minutes after the operation, Norman said he was able to read small print with the aid of his glasses.

Surgeons who performed the surgery - called keratoprosthesis - under a local anaesthetic, hope the treatment will become more widely available.
