This report from our correspondent in Bali.

On Wednesday night, emergency services at Bali's international airport held a simulation to prepare for the worst. The scenario... a Boeing 777 made an emergency landing after the pilot reported seeing smoke coming out of an engine and several passengers complained of breathing problems.

The plane made an emergency landing, but overshot the runway, exploding, killing 23 and injuring 62. The villain, a suspected terrorist who walked away alive.

The exercise was organized by the manager of Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport to determine the airport's readiness to face such an emergency.

[Heru Legowo, General Manager, Ngurah Rai Int'l Airport]:
"We hope that this effort will assure the world of aviation that we work professionally, according to existing procedures. So any airline that flies to Bali would be guaranteed safety. We will strive to maintain and provide the best service."

Ngurah Rai Airport organizes simulated emergency responses every two years, to ensure that all airport employees follow the airport's emergency plan.
