A group of mostly Muslim women in Indonesia got into the Christmas spirit by learning to make gingerbread houses. It was the first Christmas experience for some of these women.

The spirit of Christmas has made its way to Indonesia. A group of mostly Muslim women attended a class on how to make gingerbread houses on Sunday in the city of Surabaya.

The ladies are members of an Internet-based culinary group which holds a gathering once a month.

[Liliany Dewi, Group Leader]:
"Actually this online community is not only about baking, we are culinary enthusiasts. This group is open to anyone who's interested in cooking, baking and traveling."

Only four of the 19 members attending this month's Christmas-themed event were Christians.

[Liliany Dewi, Group Leader]:
"For December's event we tried to match it with Christmas. We were thinking about having a cookie class but it seems everyone can already make them. And we thought about roast chicken but we just had that last month. So we decided to have this gingerbread house class."

Everyone shared their knowledge of baking. They learned to make the dough, cut and bake it, then assemble and decorate the houses using icing, candy, fencing and Christmas trees.

[May Irianti, Participant]:
"In this culinary group we help each other. There are no envious feelings. Many of us are home bakers. So if one of us can not accept an order we can give it to our friend."

For some students it was the first experience with this traditional Christmas treat.

[Tjita Kusuma, Participant]:
"I think this is the first time we have had a gingerbread house class. I am glad I could join this class."

Christians account for about 10 percent of Indonesia's 235 million people.
