Music stars light up New York for Christmas

Jessica Simpson, Josh Groban and Sheryl Crow have performed at the illumination of the Rockefeller Centre Christmas tree in New York.

The annual show marks the beginning of Christmas celebrations in New York, soon after the Thanksgiving weekend.

Thousands of tourists and locals gathered to hear live music and celebrate the start of the holiday season.

Classical singer and pianist Groban said of the event, "There's so many different cultures out here tonight, so many different religions out here tonight, they're just out here for this wonderful sense of togetherness".

This year's Christmas tree is a 74-foot Norway Spruce, decorated with some 30,000 lights, stretching roughly five miles and powered by solar panels.
