Ukraine remains one of the leaders in the number of smokers and drinkers of alcohol in the world. To combat this problem, civic and social organizations are calling for a total ban on the advertising of tobacco, alcoholic drinks and beer. Our correspondents from Kyiv have the story.

These protesters are demanding: "Stop the advertising of beer, tobacco and alcohol!"

They want the Parliament of Ukraine to pass the relevant bills to make it so.

[Hanna Hopko, Coordinator, "For a Smoke-Free Ukraine" Coalition]:
"We gathered today to support the bill on the total ban of tobacco advertising, because it will reduce the number of smokers in Ukraine by 6%. If currently 11 million people smoke, 6% - if you do the math - is a sufficiently big number of people whose health is worth fighting for."

[Vitaliy Chernyakhovsky, Coordinator, "Forum for Salvation of Kyiv"]:
"We stand for bringing beer advertising to the level of alcohol, so it that it cannot be advertised at least during the day from 6 a.m. to midnight."

For the past 31 months, Parliament has been considering a bill that would limit advertising of beer and alcohol. And a bill on the total ban of tobacco advertising has been in the works for 13 months.

Ukraine does have a ban in place on tobacco and alcohol advertising on television, radio and in public places. But the manufacturers of cigarettes and alcoholic beverages are finding new ways to promote their products. Places such as the Internet, at points of sale, and through promoting and sponsoring various events are all widely used.

Lilya smokes, but supports the idea of banning cigarette advertising, as it greatly affects children.

[Lilya, Kyiv Resident]:
"First of all, they, naturally, repeat and ask: what is it? My child picked up a straw and asked: is this how you should smoke? I said - do not do that."
