India’s Gujarat state has been hammered by heavy rains for the past few days. And a huge amount of crops have been destroyed.
Heavy rains have damaged commercial crops in India’s Rajkot City.
Sacks of cotton and groundnuts have been destroyed by rain that has lasted for the past three days.
[Bhavesh Patel, Rajokot Agriculture Produces Marketing Cmte.]:
"The rains have damaged more than 30,000-35,000 sacks of farmers' produce of groundnuts. The quality deteriorated… 25,000-30,000 sacks of cotton have gotten wet and will be damaged.”
Farmers and traders tried to cover the sacks with plastic sheets, but the rains continued to lash the sacks lying in open spaces.
The state’s agricultural committee receives about 40,000 bags of groundnuts and over 30,000 tons of cotton from the surrounding regions.
But some say the situation is not so grim.
[Pravin Andani, Rajokot Agriculture Produces Marketing Cmte.]:
"If the sacks remain out in the open for two to four days, no one will buy it for now, that is why farmers have suffered some losses. But once the sun is out, the items will dry off. They will be able to get back the value of the product."
Six hundred million Indians depend on agriculture for their livelihood.
