The sea turtle population in the waters of Bali, Indonesia has been steadily declining in recent years. So to help the turtle numbers increase, locals built a conservation and education center. Our correspondents bring us there.

Sea turtles are an important part of the ecology here on the Indonesian island of Bali.

So when sea turtle numbers started declining due to hunting by poachers, the Balinese community decided to do something to help.

Five years ago, they built this sea turtle conservation and education center in South Denpasar.

The center gets turtle eggs from groups caring for rare species around Bali.

The eggs are hatched in special incubators.

The center is funded through tours to the public. And its chairman of conservation hopes that as more people learn about the turtles, the less they will be hunted.

This year the center has released six thousand young turtles from back into the wild.
