In Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi Appeal Rejected as Release Day

And in Burma, opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is set to be released from house arrest in two days. Today, Burma's Supreme Court rejected her final appeal. She had been appealing her sentence for more than a year--saying that her entire house arrest has been illegal. But the appeal is largely symbolic, and the ruling will likely not have any impact on her scheduled release this weekend.

Burma’s top court has rejected a final and largely symbolic appeal by detained Nobel peace prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. The opposition lawmaker has been under house arrest for 15 of the past 21 years, and made an appeal for her detainment to end two days ahead of schedule.

The Supreme Court decision was expected and has little bearing for when Suu Kyi's house arrest ends on Saturday.

However there has been no advance notice that the military junta would agree to release the 65-year-old pro-democracy leader.

Suu Kyi voiced her opposition to the parliamentary elections held last Sunday, considered a fraud by many in the international community. Critics say the election was merely a show to keep the country’s military regime in power.
