"Strasbourg Voices" Premieres in Russia

"Strasbourg Voices” is one of the best chamber choirs in France. Its repertoire includes not only the classics but contemporary French pieces sung “a cappella” or “in chapel.” Our correspondents enjoyed their singing and bring you this report.

These singers do not need instrumental accompaniment. They are the chamber choir “Voix de Strass” – or “Strasbourg Voices” – and they sing a cappella. This is their first performance in Russia where they will sing in the throne room of the Catherine Palace in “Tsarskoe Selo,” or “Tsar’s Village.”

[Catherine Bolzanzhe, Artistic Director, “Voix De Strass” Choir]:
"I know that people here music fans with great culture, and I was sure that the music would reach their hearts."

Artists perform works by French authors from the 15th and 20th centuries.

[Catherine Bolzanzhe, Artistic Director, “Voix De Strass” Choir]:
"Each of the voices is significant itself, and thus they should perform together."

The choir is performing a program they call "Sweet France". It includes classic, modern and humorous compositions. According to concert organizers, the choir surprised them with its skill, technique and artistry.

[Vitaly Vasiliev, Director, Center for Humanitarian Programs]:
"Some amazing theatrical sketches were played in some very unusual and dramatic ways. It's amazing. In general, the fact that the genre of chamber vocal ensemble can capture an audience like this is amazing."

And audience members say it was well worth the trip.

The acoustics are splendid in this room of around 26-hundred square feet.

[Irina Serikova-Shakvoyan, Project Manager, "Sweet France"]:
"Of course, in the hall there are people who do not understand much about modern music, but this is a big deal to sustain a concert, to listen to contemporary French music."

This is the final concert of the year of France in Russia - a cultural exchange program between the countries.

NTD, St. Petersburg, Russia.
