Qantas CEO Discusses Engine Failure Drama

Engineers have been working overnight to figure out the cause of engine failure on this Qantas A380 plane, forced to make an emergency landing in Singapore on Thursday.

At a news conference on Friday, Qantas CEO Alan Joyce speculated on possible causes.

[Alan Joyce, Qantas CEO]:
"We believe this is probably, or most likely, a material failure or some sort of design issue that we're tracking through and trying to understand. We don't believe this is related to maintenance in any way."

Qantas has grounded its fleet of six A380s while safety checks are conducted, which could take up to 48 hours to complete.

[Alan Joyce, Qantas CEO]:
"If we don't find any adverse findings out of the checks, the aircraft will resume operations."

Passengers who were on board the plane forced to land in Singapore, departed on Friday for Sydney.

Many were unconcerned about boarding another Qantas flight.

[Stephen Neckelsen, Traveling]:
"I'm actually feeling pretty comfortable about it. It's not such a big deal for me. I was actually asleep when it happened, I just heard a big bang, I woke up and we saw out the window on the wing, it was like, it was kind of broke, we didn't know it was the engine."

Meantime, Singapore Airlines resumed flying its fleet of A380s on Friday, after a grounding order was imposed after the Qantas incident, the biggest so far for the world's largest passenger plane.
