More than 100 people are thought to have been killed after the Merapi volcano exploded in Indonesia.

Ten days of eruptions have now killed 109 people and forced the evacuation of more than 150,000, the country's chief welfare minister said.

Mount Merapi, on the outskirts of Yogyakarta in central Java, began spewing ash and superheated gas last week.

As a column of ash billowed at least four km above the crater, villages within a 12-mile radius were evacuated.

Some evacuees held Friday prayer outside the Maguwoharjo stadium in Yogyakarta city, which has been turned into a refugee camp.
