Just over a year ago Indonesian batik clothing was declared a world cultural heritage by UNESCO. To celebrate the anniversary, a special gathering was held in Jakarta... breaking a world record. Our Jakarta bureau explains.
A new world record has been set in Jakarta, Indonesia – the most participants in a fun walk activity using batik clothes.
About 10,000 people joined in the fun.
[Jaya Suprana, Indonesian World Record Museum]:
"Today’s record is very special because a fun walk activity has never happened in the world… fun walk is an ordinary activity, but today they are holding a fun walk activity where all the participants are wearing batik.”
The activity was officially opened by the country’s minister of youth and sports.
[Andi Mallarangeng, Minister of Youth and Sports]:
"This is a very good activity, uniting batik with sports. Now batik and sport can be united."
Also on display during the fun walk activity was the world's longest batik cloth.
It took almost 500 people to carry the 1,500-foot cloth, made up of motifs from various regions in Indonesia.
Interest in batik has soared in the country since October 2009, when UNESCO determined Indonesian batik to be “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”
