Fire Breaks Out at Coalmine in Eastern India

8 years ago86 views

An illegal coalmine catches fire in eastern India's Asansol city on Tuesday. Villagers nearby fear the fire outbreak could spread further as local authorities neglect to extinguish it.

On Tuesday, flames broke out at an illegal coalmine in Asansol City, a coal mining and industrial metropolis in eastern India.

The locals blame the mine's management for neglecting the site.

One of the villagers says the fire could cause devastation in the area if it is not extinguished soon enough.

[Kartik Rajak, Villager]:
"I saw the smoke when I came here. There is a village near the place from where the smoke is coming out. There is agricultural land all over the place. The fire can cause devastation in the nearby villages also. The authority is totally responsible for this."

Villagers say they have yet to receive help from local authorities.

[Kartik Rajak, Villager]:
"As you can see the smoke is still coming out and there is nobody to extinguish it. The whole area is under threat from the fire. Any moment the fire can spread if necessary steps are not taking as soon as possible."

Around ten thousand people stay in nearby villages.
