Violence continues on the streets of Karachi, Pakistan today. Dozens have lost their lives ahead of a by-election to replace a provincial lawmaker murdered in August.

More people were transported to the hospital as violence raged on in southern Pakistan on Tuesday.

At least 49 people have been killed in Karachi since Saturday when violence erupted ahead of a by-election to replace a provincial lawmaker murdered in August.

Unrest in the country's commercial capital raised fear of further instability.

According to a police official, unknown gunmen riding on motorcycles opened fire in the Sher Shah area, resulting in eight killed and ten injured.

Many shops were closed following the incident as police patrolled the streets.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement, or MQM, a dominant political body in Karachi, has placed pressure on the government to stem the violence. The MQM says its workers were among those killed.

Political and ethnic rivalries and turf wars make it difficult to maintain order in Karachi, home to Pakistan's main port, stock exchange and central bank.
