Residents of Mumbai city protest against an elevated metro line that will begin to be built this week. Protesters demand underground metro lines, as the project could negatively affect infrastructure and families living in slums.
Residents of Mumbai city staged a protest against the construction of elevated metro lines on Monday.
The protesters say the elevated line would cause further damage to the city's infrastructure.
[Kunica Lal, Bollywood Film Actress]:
"Let us make it clear that we are not against the metro, we are not against any infrastructural development, but we want underground metro lines...because otherwise it is going to ruin our city. Mumbai is a very typical kind of city. It is a very densely populated city and you cannot have an elevated metro here."
Others say many impoverished families would be negatively affected by the project.
[Aftab A Siddiqui, Linking Road Association]:
"Two thousands slums get affected which they have no say."
The residents also presented an alternative plan for the underground metro line to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.
But rail authorities rejected the plan, saying that the underground metro line would cost too much to build.
