The U.S. and Pakistan will start a third-round of strategic talks today to improve bilateral relations. The U.S. says it hopes to "move beyond" tensions with Pakistan.

After a period of strain between the U.S. and Pakistan, the U.S. said on Tuesday it hopes to "move beyond these tensions" during the third round of talks of the U.S.-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue. The dialogue aims to reverse decades of mistrust between the two countries.

[Frank Ruggiero, U.S. Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan]:
"The United States supports Pakistan's efforts, and we do this in this dialogue, to expand democratic institutions, foster economic development, expand opportunity and defeat extremist groups who threaten both nations, common security."

The talks, which start on Wednesday, will include Pakistani security issues.

[Frank Ruggiero, U.S. Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan]:
"There has been a lot of work done between our Department of Defense and the military in Pakistan over what a long-term military procurement strategy might look like to achieve our common objectives. I think that that discussion will lead into the next round of discussions at the strategic dialogue..."

In addition to security issues, U.S. and Pakistani officials are expected to discuss the devastating floods in Pakistan.
