Professor Stefan Kaufmann and his team at Berlin's Charité Hospital have developed a new tuberculosis vaccine, which might even be effective against drug-resistant strains of TB bacteria. It has already been shown to be effective in initial clinical trials. Every year more than nine million people around the world get tuberculosis, and two million people die from it. The disease poses the biggest threat to the poor and disadvantaged. Professor Kaufmann sees it as the duty of researchers and pharmaceuticals companies to combat it.
