National Highway 87 in India's northern Uttarakhand state got a new route after landslides and heavy rain caused severe damage.

It caved in more than 60 feet below and traffic was stopped for several days.

The state Public Welfare Department has deployed engineers to cut the terrain and repair the road.

As of Tuesday, three excavators were at the construction site and cleared boulders and debris. More than 40 trees were also cut down.

[Ajay Tamta, Engineer, Public Welfare Dept.]:
"The terrain is being cut to about 800 feet. It will take about eight to 10 days for the work to be complete. It won't be a temporary route but we will make a road, which will be 12 meters wide. It is going to be a permanent road."

Big boulders need to be blasted before the construction work can begin.
