Hurricane Igor is continuing to strengthen in the Atlantic Ocean, and may become a Category 5 storm within the next 48 hours. Forecasters say wind speeds have already reached 150 miles per hour.

The ninth named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane season is getting stronger.

These shots of Hurricane Igor - taken from the International Space Station - show the massive storm churning in the Atlantic Ocean.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center say Igor has strengthened to a Category 4 storm - with maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour.

Based on a five-day forecast track, by Friday, Igor is expected to be north of Puerto Rico and well to the east of the Bahamas. It could also pose problems for Bermuda.

Most computer models forecast Igor -which may become a Category 5 storm- is unlikely to threaten the U.S. east coast.
