Pakistani Flood Victims Short of Flood Relief Supplies

Officials in Pakistan expect floodwaters to recede across the country in the next few days, as the last river torrents empty into the Arabian Sea.
When that happens, millions of Pakistanis expect the government to quickly deliver housing and compensation for the loss of livestock and crops.
Many flood victims are living in tents beside the Peshawar-Nowshera highway in Khyber Pahtunkhwa Province.
These tents have been erected by flood survivors who are living off donations doled out by commuters on the busy highway.
On Monday, flood survivors and their children stood on the highway, waving and gesturing to passing vehicles to stop and give them something to eat.
An elderly flood victim says most of the people on the road were from nearby villages and towns inundated by the floods.
[Hakeem Khan, Flood Victim]:
"All these people are flood survivors who are badly affected by the floods that hit Nowshera. But we are not getting our fair share of aid. People from outside are snatching what belongs to us. The day before yesterday, tents were being distributed but these people created a problem.”
[Dilawer Khan, Flood Victim]:
"These people -- in around 50 tents -- have come from outside and are camping here."
As the number of flood victims rise everyday, relief goods are reaching only a fraction of the affected, giving rise to anger, frustration and distrust.

"Everyone should help these people. They are facing great hardships. Too many people have been affected."
More than $800 million has been donated to help Pakistan's flood victims. Floods have killed nearly 1,600 people and left over four million homeless.
