Liger Cubs Born in Taiwan

These two are Taiwan’s first liger cubs. Yes, you heard right, liger cubs… a cross between a tiger and a lion.

A private zookeeper in the south of the country succeeded in crossbreeding a male lion with a tigress.

The mother, a Bengal tigress named Beauty, gave birth to the triplets on Sunday.

[Huang Kuo-nan, Zookeeper]:
"One of them seemed to have hypothermia, so I quickly dried it up, and kept it warm with a blow dryer."

The cubs are being hand-reared as the mother has made no attempt to nurse them.

The zookeeper says he did not mate the two animals on purpose.

[Huang Kuo-nan, Zookeeper]:
"Usually when a lion and a tiger are kept together, they will certainly try to kill each other, but these two have been spending time together since they were small."

In Taiwan it is illegal to cross breed rare, protected animals.

The zoo is now under investigation and could face a fine of up to fifty thousand Taiwanese dollars if found guilty.
