Thousands of Bangladeshis took to the streets of Dhaka, to protest against what they're calling their government’s “undemocratic” policies and ties with India. The rally was led by the country’s opposition leader, who says that the government is “selling the country’s interests."

Bangladeshi opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia led thousands of people in a street march in Dhaka on Monday. They were protesting against what Khaleda calls the government's (quote) "undemocratic attitude and suicidal ties with India."

Khaleda, who is also a former prime minister, accused the government of "selling the country's interests," detaining opposition leaders and activists on false and fabricated charges, and failing to address gas, power and water shortages.

Khaleda was ringed by bodyguards and party leaders, while heavily armored police followed the rally closely.

She was particularly critical of a $1 billion loan agreement Dhaka signed this week with India.

The loan will be used to implement a number of development projects in Bangladesh, including roads and railway that India will use for carrying goods to its northeastern states across Bangladesh.

The opposition party says such deals would benefit India most.
