8 years ago828 views

Thousands of people in the Phillippines have been forced to leave their homes after violence broke out between Muslim rebel groups in the country's south. Warring factions are fighting for control of a river delta.

More than 5,000 people have fled their homes in the Philippines’ south, after violence between Muslim rebel groups broke out on Saturday, just days ahead of Islam's holy month of Ramadan.

Warring rebel factions are battling for control of a river delta in Datu Piang.

One villager said she hoped a solution could be found soon, as it was the civilians who were suffering.

[Guiana Usman, Villager]:
"I hope this problem can be solved, because we Muslims, we civilians, are the ones who are affected. It's really hard for us."

The army fired artillery rounds on Monday, saying it was prepared to use force if necessary.
