Western Germany used to be a hotbed of talented modern artists, with the Rhineland producing the avant-garde likes of Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Joseph Beuys … as well as collectors.But after reunification Berlin also became capital of the German art scene. Now Cologne, Dusseldorf and other Rhineland cities are fighting to reestablish their credentials.
