About 5,000 Thais gathered on Wednesday to break three world records for the longest human centipede, the most people hugging for one minute and the most people shaking hands at one time.

Participants were from across the country including students, nurses, actors, actresses and soldiers.

About 3,000 participants were tethered in a single-file line to beat the world record for the longest human centipede.

Previously set in Japan in 2001, the old record included just over 2,000 participants.

The organizer said the event aimed to pull all Thais together.

4,918 participants turned their faces to meet each other and started shaking hand for about 30 seconds.

The previous record of hand shaking was set in Hong Kong in 2007 with 4,898 people.

As the event continued, participants had one record left to beat.

They took their hands off and started embracing each other to make a new record of the most people hugging for one minute.

They hugged each other for about one-and-a-half minutes as the rule states that participant must hug each other for at least one minute to break the record.
