France's Sarkozy Arrives for Euro Crisis Meeting

8 years ago154 views

French President Sarkozy is in Berlin for a pre-summit meeting with the German Chancellor to try and find consensus on how to tackle the euro crisis. Here’s that report.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has arrived in Berlin on Monday for a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The focus of the meeting ahead of a key EU summit on Thursday is the euro crisis.

The leaders of France and Germany are hoping to overcome deep-rooted disagreements on how to take the common currency forward. That’s because the 16-nation euro zone is grappling with its worst crisis since it formed 11 years ago.

As the main motors of European integration, Berlin and Paris are desperate to find a mutual path towards tighter policy coordination.

The two leaders are meeting after media speculation of a rift between the two countries and after an earlier meeting was postponed at short notice.

The main disagreements between Paris and Berlin centre on France’s criticism of Germany's export dominance, and Berlin's reluctance to give politicians more power over financial decisions.

Both countries agree on a potential ban for naked short-selling of shares and sovereign bonds. Both countries are also pushing forward with tough austerity measures and tighter fiscal policies.
