This documentary is about the spirit of the East End of London. We are taking you on a historical and cultural trip through the East of London to find out what gives the area its unique spirit...From the Romans and the Huguenots, to the Jewish, Indian, Pakistani and Bengali community. It looks at the extinction of the old East End community oppressed by the student invasion and the multiplication of bars and clubs - the fall of the old fashion markets being one of the most significant outcomes of this. The film also takes a look at the dark side of the area, from Jack the Ripper to the Kray brothers who ruled the area around the 60's and were the most significant leaders of organised crime in London.
Enjoy!

I have a website dedicated to my memories of the East End. I was born in Bethnal Green in 1943. My parents ran a 'pie 'n' mash shop' in Whitechapel. I remember the old East End very well and have written a series of stories of thoughts and memories, which are illustrated with pictures and tunes - please check out the site: www.eastend-memories.org.uk and let me know what you think.

Included on the site are stories about the Sunday Morning Markets, the Hackney Empire, the cinemas of the area and many colourful characters that used to be found in the area ...... including my mother and father. I hope that you enjoy the tales.
