New York police have released security camera footage of a possible suspect in the attempted bomb attack in Times Square.

The 19 second video shows a man taking a long-sleeved shirt off, revealing a red shirt underneath, and stuffing the shirt into his bag.

The man, who police described as a white male in his 40s, looks over his shoulder at least twice as he walks away from the scene.

Investigators are pouring over surveillance camera footage and examining the device which was made of propane, gasoline and fireworks.

Officers found the bomb in the vehicle as Times Square in Midtown Manhattan was packed with tourists and theatre-goers.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said there is no evidence of a link to al-Qaeda or any other militant organization in the incident.
