Radiation Scrap Metal Death in India

In India, the Delhi state government says it will provide compensation to the family of a worker at a scrap metal shop who died from exposure to radioactive material.

The man, named Rajender, suffered multiple organ failure after he was exposed to Cobalt-60 at a city scrap metal yard.

On April 9, scrap dealer Deepak Jain had bought a consignment containing a piece of the radioactive material. When his employees handled the bright piece of metal from the scrap heap, they suffered burn injuries.

Jain himself experienced health problems, too. His condition is critical and he is now in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

Ten sources of Cobalt-60 had been discovered in the scrap market.
