Nudity of any kind was considered obscene and punishable as a felony in the US until the Supreme Court finally ended censorship in the late 1960s. For a period of almost ten years after that, there were few restrictions. Some of the material published during that liberating period has been re -criminalized in certain states, as well as federal law. However, current restrictions are much less onerous than those of the early 20th century.
