In late February 2010, the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC) received hidden camera footage of horse slaughter practices at Quebec's Viandes Richelieu and Alberta's Bouvry Exports - the latter known as North Americas largest exporter of horsemeat.

The CHDC has asked a panel of veterinarians, the BC SPCA and the World Society for the Protection of Animals to review the footage, which contains numerous instances of improper stunning and horses showing signs of returning consciousness.

Early audit results of the footage show automatic failures of both facilities.

As there are only two government-approved methods of stunning horses in Canada - captive bolt gun and rifle - and both methods have been shown to cause prolonged suffering in numerous horses, we conclude that these animals cannot be slaughtered humanely in today's slaughterhouse assembly lines.

The CHDC therefore calls for the immediate closure of Canada's horse slaughter plants.

1. la seule chose que je voit c'est 1 gros con qui ne sait pas ce servir d'une guillotine et d'un fusil. De plus il est gaucher et l'arme est droitière. Mériterait de ce faire enfoncer le bâton électrique dans le cul.

Thank you for your comment weebs43. We can hardly believe it ourselves but both plants (both owned by the Bouvry Family) continue to operate.

If this was the US, the government would've suspended the plants' licenses and operations and charged the workers involved.

The government is clearly not representing the interests of the animals or those of Canadians, 2/3 of whom do not believe horse slaughter should be allowed.

Please share these videos far and wide. Only when enough people demand change will it happen!

Okay, I get that there is a market for horse meat. I don't like it, but I get it. What I don't understand is how this unbelievably horrendous treatment of these poor animals can be recorded, proven and still nothing is done about it.
I am sickened by what I see in these videos. These poor animals deserve the right to instant death, not a prolonged suffering at the hands of imbecile employees who have zero compassion. Yes, stupid people, I am talking to you, about you and those whom employ you!
Don't respond by saying we as humans, don't treat each other with empathy, I don't want to hear it. We are not talking about people here so let's not confuse the situation.
All it takes is a well placed bullet, is that so difficult? So much to ask? Come on, people let's be compassionate and do the right thing. One little act, one simple thing can change the entire process for the condemned.
