Homes evacuated as volcano erupts in Iceland

    by ODN

A volcanic eruption near the Eyjafjallajökull glacier in southern Iceland has forced hundreds of people living nearby to evacate their homes.

Three Red Cross centres have been set up for the evacuees. So far, no injuries have been reported. There is a risk of flooding if eruptions underneath the glacier lead the ice to melt.

The Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration closed off the area surrounding the volcano to air traffic. Three flights from the United States were either turned back or grounded in the US because of the volcanic eruption. The planes had been due to come in from Orlando, Seattle and Boston.

The last volcanic eruption in the area occurred in 1821.
