A fireworks explosion killed 21 people and injured 48 during Lunar New Year celebrations in the town of Puning in China’s southern Guangdong province on Friday.

Chinese state-run media reports say, 13 people were killed instantly in the explosion, eight died in hospitals and of the 48 injured, six are in critical condition.

A local resident told state-run media, the force from the blast made cracks in the walls and door of his house, situated about 200 meters from the blast.

The Lunar New Year started on February 14th. Many Chinese continue celebrations for weeks, but the holiday is usually darkened by deadly fireworks accidents.

Last year, the headquarters of Chinese state-run broadcaster CCTV went up in flames in Beijing. In that fireworks accident, one fireman was killed, and six other firemen were injured, along with two construction workers.
