A fire broke out at a shoe factory in the early hours of Friday in New Delhi.

It happened at a shoe manufacturing plant a little after five this morning.

The fire first broke out in the basement of the factory.

Firefighters and rescuers were trying hard to bring the fire under control, concerned it might spread to other factories in the vicinity. It was especially difficult to fight the flames because of the large amount of flammable plastic inside.

[R. C. Sharma, Director, Delhi Fire Service]:
"Since it was a plastic factory, there were plastics in the basement and it will take some time and the cooling operation is going on. But right now things are under control."

No casualties have been reported. No word yet on what caused the blaze.
