Aceh is on the north western tip of Sumatra in Indonesia; population 3,930,000. There was a bitter conflict here for 30 years when Aceh tried to break away from the Indonesian government and become independent. There was terrible violence between the Indonesian military and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) with many innocent people caught up in the cross fire. The conflict ended in a peace agreement in 2005.
