South African democracy leader Nelson Mandela celebrated the 20th anniversary of his release from prison amongst family and friends.

Former South African President Nelson Mandela celebrates with family and friends the 20th anniversary of his release from prison.

After 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela became a free man on the 11th of February 1990. That day marked the end of apartheid rule and the start of democracy.

Former members of the ANC National Reception Committee pay tribute to the smiling 91-years-old Mandela. Cyril Ramaphosa recalls how the reception committee was hastily formed on the eve of Mandela’s release having no previous experience.

[Cyril Ramaphosa, Former Chairman, ANC National Reception Committee]:
"These people were in the National Reception Committee. They worked hard day and night to make sure that your release was as smooth as it could possibly be and I would tell you 'tata' ('father' referring to Nelson Mandela) that they were so ill prepared, totally ill prepared for your reception back into society. How they did it is a miracle because they masqueraded as event organizers and they knew nothing about event organizing.”

National Planning Minister Trevor Manuel also shares his memories of the day.

[Trevor Manuel, Former Finance Minister]:
"President De Klerk is making the announcement now across the roadin Tuinhuis. Mr. Mandela will be released tomorrow. Hey what do you do? You know we didn't have cell phones, walkie-talkies, radio, nothing. So the one thing we did was to get word to anyone who was even half an activist in Western Cape."

The South African parliament will be opened next Thursday to commemorate Mandela’s release.
