Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is visiting Benin as part of her ambassador role in the fight against AIDS. She met with President Thomas Yayi Boni on Tuesday.

[Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, First Lady of France]:
"United we can fight against these pandemic diseases, which represent a plague for the entire world, for Benin, for Africa, but also for Europe, and so I am full of hope, and this is the message that I wanted to send."

Bruni-Sarkozy is an ambassador for the Global Fund. She is calling for the elimination of HIV transmission from mothers to their children by 2015.

On Wednesday, Bruni-Sarkozy and Melinda Gates, representing the Bill Gates Foundation, were scheduled to visit a hospital in the village of Dangbo, about 62 miles from the capital Cotonou.

The "House of the Redeeming Love" hospital in Dangbo specializes in programs of protection against transmission of HIV from mother to infant.
