Three Gorges Dam Forces 300,000 More People to Relocate

8 years ago704 views

In China, the controversial Three Gorges Dam project continues to push forward. An additional 300,000 residents in the southwestern municipality of Chongqing are being forced to relocate, state-run media reported on Thursday.

Officials say relocations are to prevent communities from polluting the reservoir and to protect them from potential seismic disasters, according to state-run China Daily.

Opponents of the 22.5 billion-dollar dam have long criticized the project because of its huge environmental and social costs. Villagers who’ve lost their homes complain they have not been given any compensation. Officials have said 1.4 million people have already been forced to relocate.

The dam is the largest hydroelectric project in the world. It’s more than 7,500 feet wide and almost 280 feet high. The dam itself is located in Hubei province, but most of the reservoir is in Chongqing.
