Diamond merchants in India’s Gujarat state say the detention of 21 diamond merchants in China will hurt their industry.

China has allegedly charged the merchants with diamond smuggling in Shenzhen City on January 8th.

Diamond traders in India say the detained traders are innocent.

[Praveen Nanawati, Diamond Trader]:
“I believe that our industrialists can do no wrong. Today, as we can see, India is fast emerging as a global power and relations between China and India are getting stronger. They [Chinese officials] have detained some Indian diamond traders, but I think it has no basis.”

President of the Gujarat Diamond Association says the detention would hamper trade between the two countries.

[S.K. Seth, President, Gujarat Diamond Association]:
"Whatever is happening is not good for the diamond industry. Trade between China and India is quite good, and if something of this sort happens, then the Indian diamond traders in China will come back and this is not good for the diamond industry."

According to Indian media reports, the detention of the Indians in China comes at a time when some Chinese nationals working in India have been encountering visa problems.
