The Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme came to Turkey to meet with Prime Minister Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul.

Belgium, who will take the EU presidency in 2010, pledged to support Turkey’s entry into the European Union.

    [Yves Leterme, Belgian Prime Minister]:
"I would like to underline the proposition I have formulated with my Turkish counterpart to open a supplementary chapter in negotiations to revive the process and avoid a deadlock."

But the Belgian Prime Minister stressed Cyprus as being a key issue for Turkey’s membership.

    [Yves Leterme, Belgian Prime Minister]:
"I think it's very important to achieve progress in the Cyprus issue so that this issue will not be an obstacle for Turkey, in 2010 when my country will assume the European Union's presidency."

Yves Leterme also visited Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Istanbul.
