More and more people in Timmins (northern Ontario) are visiting the local food bank. Rick Young and his team of dedicated volunteers respond to the need, inspired by the memory of former NHL player, Father Les Costello. The local economy has diversified over the decades – but mining remains key. “The current high price of gold has buffered us against the worst of the crisis,” says Ron Grech, news editor at the Timmins Times. “Our forestry sector has been in decline, like everywhere across the country, but mining has been our saving grace.” This being said, food banks are more and more streched as this photo essay shows.
