Surprisingly, new research from the American College of Surgeons found two-thirds of women (66%) admit they were not aware or did not know if breast cancer treatment centers and facilities can be accredited. However, where women choose to get breast cancer treatment can impact the care they receive, and ultimately the results they achieve. To be “accredited,” breast cancer centers must follow a comprehensive and consistent set of standards for treatment based on medical guidelines and evidence. They must also support patients’ social and emotional needs. Accredited centers are screened by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program of the American College of Surgeons and advised by leading patient groups and professional medical societies. After a brief overview of accreditation – what it means and why it is important – women overwhelmingly find it to be an important aspect in choosing a breast cancer treatment facility. Dr. David Winchester, medical director for the College’s cancer programs, talked about the importance of accreditation and what women need to know about accreditation. He was joined by a breast cancer surgeon and a patient and they discussed the results of the survey that revealed women’s lack of awareness of accreditation, the importance of choosing an accredited institution and the facilities available in your area.
