Creutzfeldt-Jakob-disease is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy allegedly caused by prions. There are several such "wasting" diseases. In animals, there is Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) also known as "mad cow" disease. There is no cure, and folks die within a year of the onset of symptoms as a rule.In the last few years, people have contracted this disease from receiving tissue transplants from other people who have been infected or who died of the disease.
