Al Bowlly - Summer's End

by Lorna

To quote (yet again) Barry McCanna, the extremely knowlegeable moderator of the "Bowlly" Yahoogroup, writing on 29th December 2006: "Al recorded this [version of 'Summer's End', co-written c. 1937 by Nat Madison and Lew Tobin] with Geraldo on 16th December 1938, and take 1 was issued on HMV BD-5443 c/w "Any Broken Hearts To Mend?" It was reissued on LP, EMI World Records SH 516, and CD, AJA 5064 and CD 1136."

The theme of transience is particularly poignant given the date of the recording when war clouds were looming. Yet the supreme artistry of the recording triumphantly endures down the ages.
