Town walls in Poreč, Croatia

The system of city walls in Poreč dates back to antiquity, and reconstructions and adaptations took place periodically from the 12th to the 16th century, always on the foundations of the old ones—the most comprehensive reconstruction dates from the 13th century, when podesta Warnerio de Gillago governed the town. In the 15th century, under the threat of Ottoman conquests, special attention was paid to the construction of defensive towers preserved to this day.
At one point in history, a trench was dug in front of the east town walls, which made Poreč an island, while the bridge leading to the town gates, was preserved under the pavement.
