Les derniers cas de variole // Last cases of smallpox
La rédaction de geneveMonde.ch a souhaité revenir sur un événement marquant de l'histoire de la santé publique en rencontrant le Dr Daniel Tarantola, ancien directeur du Département de l'immunisation, des vaccins et des produits biologiques de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé à Genève.
Il s'agit de l'éradication de la variole à l'issue d'une campagne mondiale à laquelle Daniel Tarantola a participé activement sur le terrain, non seulement en Afrique mais aussi en Asie, et plus particulièrement au Bangladesh. La variole était un candidat de choix pour l'éradication, car sa menace et sa gravité étaient redoutées dans le monde entier.
Dans le deuxième de nos cinq entretiens avec Daniel Tarantola, nous revenons sur les derniers cas de variole au Bangladesh et en Somalie. Un grand merci aux équipes de l'OMS, en particulier au Dr Rosamund Lewis, à Marie Villemin-Partow, à Reynald Erard et à Tarik Jasarevic, pour leur soutien dans la documentation et la production de cette série.

The geneveMonde.ch editorial team wanted to take a look back at a milestone in the history of public health by meeting Dr. Daniel Tarantola, former Director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals at the World Health Organization in Geneva.
It was the eradication of smallpox following a worldwide campaign in which Daniel Tarantola played an active part in the field, not only in Africa but also in Asia, and more particularly in Bangladesh. Smallpox was a prime candidate for eradication, as its threat and severity were feared worldwide.
In the second of our five-part interview with Daniel Tarantola, we look back at the latest cases of smallpox in Bangladesh and Somalia. Many thanks to the WHO teams, especially Dr. Rosamund Lewis, Marie Villemin-Partow, Reynald Erard and Tarik Jasarevic, for their support in documenting and producing this series.
