Nigel Benn turned pro in 1987 and won his first 22 bouts inside the distance. Benn won the vacant Commonwealth middleweight belt in 1988, with a second round stoppage of Abdul Umaru Sanda. He made three successful defences of his title before losing in the sixth round to Michael Watson. Benn then moved to America, and after three wins against fringe contenders, Benn challenged Doug DeWitt for the WBO middleweight title. Benn overcame an early knockdown to stop DeWitt in the eighth round. In his first defence, Benn destroyed Iran Barkley in the first round.

Chris Eubank turned pro in America in 1985. After five successive wins, he based himself in the UK. He had good boxing skills, decent power and an excellent chin, but there was nothing in his record of 24 fights that suggested he was world class. He was unbeaten against a succession of journeymen and fringe contenders.
