Roberto Duran won his first world title in 1972, when he stopped Ken Buchanan in the 13th round. He went on to make 12 successful defences of his undisputed world titles, winning 11 inside the distance. He avenged the only loss of his career to date when he stopped Esteban De Jesus in the 11 round. Duran won his trilogy bout with De Jesus in his final lightweight title defence with a 12th round stoppage. Duran then moved up to welterweight and had four fights in a year, bringing his record to 67-1. The winner would be lined up for a superfight with Sugar Ray Leonard.

Carlos Palomino won the WBC welterweight belt in 1976, when he stopped John Stracey in the 12th round. He made seven successful defences of his title before travelling to Puerto Rico to take on Wilfred Benitez. Palomino lost by a somewhat controversial split decision.
